To Fill, Or Not To Fill? That Is The Question.
There's no shortage of misconceptions about nail care—especially when it comes to fills. How do you know when to fill or start fresh? Are all fills created equal? We’re here to bust the myths so you can keep every manicure in tip-top shape without second-guessing yourself.
What is a fill in nails?
A fill is the process of adding product to the regrowth area to maintain the appearance and strength of a gel polish or artificial nail manicure rather than applying a new set. A fill can also fix imperfections or ridges in the natural nail.
How much is a fill in nails?
A Gel Couleur fill usually ranges from $40 to $60. The cost of a Gel-X® fill varies based on location and salon expertise. Pricing is comparable to a new Gel-X® set since the application time is similar.
Myth #1: All Nail Fills Are the Same
Nope! Not all nail fills are created equal, and the type of fill you choose depends on your manicure. A gel manicure fill is typically done within two to three weeks. If it’s been longer than three weeks or there’s significant lifting, it’s best to remove the old gel and apply a fresh set.
For Gel-X® fills, Aprés Soft Gel Builder is the go-to product. This self-leveling gel rebuilds the apex, creates a smooth surface, and increases retention. And as with all of our soft gel products, it can easily be soaked off with acetone.
Our Soft Gel Builder can also be used as a nail ridge filler to smooth out imperfections in the natural nail, making it easier to apply color while imparting strength and durability to natural nail manicures.
Myth #2: It’s Better to Create a New Gel-X® Set Instead of Filling
Not always! The decision to fill or start fresh depends on the condition of the Gel-X® set. If the tips have been on for less than two weeks and show minimal lifting, a fill is a great option using our Soft Gel Builder. However, if it’s been over three weeks or there’s noticeable lifting, it’s best to remove and apply a fresh set to maintain nail health and set longevity.
Myth #3: Nail Artists Lose Money by Doing Gel-X® Fills
Not true! When appropriate, choosing a fill over a new set saves nail artists both removal time and product, while helping clients maximize their investment—boosting customer retention.
Myth #4: Fills Weaken Your Natural Nails
False! A properly done fill does not damage natural nails. In fact, fills benefit your natural nails, as they create less wear and tear than a full removal and application. The key is using the right technique and products. Over-filing can thin the natural nail, but with proper care, fills help maintain strength and durability.
The Do’s and Don’ts of Nail Fills
Do:
-
Assess the nails first: If lifting is present, removal and a fresh set may be the best option.
-
Stick to a professional schedule: You should only do Gel-X® fills on sets that have been on for less than two to three weeks with minimal lifting.
-
Choose the right products: Proper technique matters for longevity and nail health.
Don’t:
-
Over-file the natural nail: This can weaken it over time and cause sensitivity.
-
Skip proper prep steps: These are essential for a long-lasting fill.
-
Apply product over lifting: This can lead to further lifting and breakage, possibly damaging the natural nail.
Nail fills aren’t just about efficiency—they’re about keeping your nails looking flawless and feeling strong. So next time you’re debating, “To fill or not to fill?”—make the smart choice and proceed with confidence!
